Survey asked Koreans to rank the top foods they consider to be a part of Korean cuisine, which revealed that 63.9% did not consider fried chicken to be a part of Korean cuisine (45.1% did not consider yangnyeom chicken to be Korean either).

1. Kimchi 99.7%
2. Dwenjang jjigae (soybean stew) 99.3%
3. Buchimgae (savory pancakes) 95.3%
4. Japchae (glass noodles) 94.3%
5. Kimbap 90.8%
6. Samgyupsal (pork belly) 77.9%
7. Hotteok (sweet pancakes) 68.9%
8. Walnut cookies 67%
9. Army stew/fish cake stew 63.7%

1. [+169, -25] I wouldn’t consider fried chicken to be Korean but I think ganjang/soy sauce chicken and yangnyeom chicken are clearly Korean, no? Soy sauce chicken is truly a brilliant creation.

2. [+38, -6] Technically, fried chicken is a foreign food to us… just like how it doesn’t matter how long kimchi’s been in China, it still belongs to us!!

3. [+21, -2] I guess it’s a Korean style of fried chicken

4. [+15, -0] I’m more surprised that only 99.7% of Koreans consider kimchi to be Korean.. who are the 0.3%? Chinese?

5. [+9, -1] The name itself is ‘chicken’, it’s not even a Korean word ㅋㅋ

6. [+8, -0] I think it’s more accurate to call it ‘Korean style’ than ‘Korean’

7. [+6, -0] It’s Korean style chicken, not necessarily Korean.. just like how with jajangmyeon, we have our own Korean style version of it.

8. [+4, -0] If we’re getting technical, we took the foreign concept of frying chicken and reinterpreted it in a Korean style… and yeah, I’d agree that it’s not necessarily a part of Korean cuisine.

9. [+5, -2] Just because we eat a lot of fried chicken doesn’t make it Korean. That’s like saying if the Japanese eat a lot of kimchi, kimchi is theirs. There’s a difference between Korean cuisine and something we just enjoy eating a lot of.

10. [+3, -0] Fried chicken is not Korean. We just have a Korean style version of it.
